Focus · doctor–patient relationship

Understanding your illness to decide together

Being told of a liver disease — sometimes a cancer — and the need for an operation causes anxiety that often prevents the patient from taking in the information. At the Centre, doctors use an interactive communication tool, LiverSP, to address this.

On a touchscreen tablet, the practitioner handles a three-dimensional model of the liver, places the patient's lesion(s) on it, and explains in concrete terms the disease, the planned surgical procedure and its consequences for the organ. The patient sees, handles and understands their situation: dialogue and trust are strengthened — to decide together, with full knowledge.
